Exterior floor tiles are the best option when we want to\ndesign our terrace, courtyard or even balcony. However, choosing the right type\nof exterior floor tiles is not very simple.<\/o:p><\/p>

To choose the exterior floor tiles that best suit your\nneeds, it is very important to know that they can be found on the Romanian\nmarket in a wide range of colors, textures, and finishes. The use of exterior floor\ntiles offers unlimited design possibilities, as a result of the varied models\navailable on the market.<\/o:p><\/p>

In general, floor tiles are preferred by buyers because they\ncan be applied directly to floors, so they can be installed both indoors and\noutdoors. Its advantages are multiple: it is installed quickly and easily, is\ndurable over time, easy to clean and does not require special maintenance, as\nin the case of other surfaces.<\/o:p><\/p>

Types of Exterior Floor Tiles<\/o:p><\/b><\/p>

Porcelain floor tiles are formed by firing ceramic plates at\nvery high temperatures above 1200\u2070C. As a result of the high temperatures, the\nprocess called “vitrification” occurs, resulting in a compact and\nhighly resistant tile. Due to its density, porcelain floor tiles can be used\nunder high wear conditions, and due to their hardness, they resist heavy\ntraffic, being used for outdoor floors.<\/o:p><\/p>

Unlike indoor floor tiles, porcelain tiles can be used for\noutdoor spaces. Indoor floor tiles do not withstand high temperature variations\nand increased wear and tear. Porcelain floor tiles are produced with a matte,\nglossy, or polished surface through the polishing process (polished tiles\nreceive a noble, shiny surface).<\/o:p><\/p>

The advantage of porcelain floor tiles is that they can also\nbe used for interiors. <\/o:p><\/p>

The term “rectified tiles” does not refer to the\nphysical or mechanical properties of the tiles, but to the process of\nrectifying the tiles, that is, cutting the edges of the ceramic tiles so that\nthey form a 90\u2070 angle. This results in rectified floor tiles being uniformly\nsuitable on the surface to which they are applied, with a dimensional deviation\nbetween tiles of max. 0.1 mm. In general, non-rectified floor tiles may have\nsmall size differences of 1-2 mm, caused by the shrinkage phenomenon after the\nfiring process.<\/o:p><\/p>

Freeze-resistant exterior floor tiles<\/o:p><\/b><\/p>

It is important to consider that we live in a country with\nfour seasons, which is why we need to consider the use of exterior floor tiles\nthat are resistant to freezing.<\/o:p><\/p>

Most of the time, such arrangements are made in summer, and\nmany simply forget to consider temperature variations when choosing the\nmaterials they will use. Given that in Romania, during winter, temperatures\ndrop even below -15 degrees Celsius, it is advisable to choose frost-resistant\nfloor tiles for outdoor spaces, such as terraces or balconies.<\/o:p><\/p>

Porcelain floor tiles are frost-resistant, so they are the\nmost recommended type of tiles for designing outdoor spaces. Frost-resistant\nfloor tiles can be found on the Romanian market in a variety of models and\ncolors.<\/o:p><\/p>

Anti-slip exterior floor tiles<\/o:p><\/b><\/p>

As previously mentioned, the best type of exterior floor\ntile is porcelain, but it is important to keep in mind that not all porcelain\nfloor tiles react the same way. <\/o:p><\/p>

Therefore, it is important to take into account the PEI\n(Porcelain Enamel Institute) classification, which measures the wear resistance\n(abrasion) of floor tiles using a special device with abrasive rollers.<\/o:p><\/p>

There are five wear resistance indexes, and the floor tile\nis chosen based on the degree of wear to which it will be subjected, and\ntherefore the space in which it will be installed:<\/o:p><\/p>

PEI I – for areas with light traffic (bathroom, bedroom)<\/o:p><\/p>

PEI II – for areas with moderate traffic<\/o:p><\/p>

PEI III – for residential areas with heavy traffic\n(kitchens, hallways, stairs, terraces, courtyards, walkways)<\/o:p><\/p>

PEI IV – for commercial areas with medium traffic, such as\noffices or hotel rooms<\/o:p><\/p>

PEI V – for commercial areas with heavy traffic, such as\nshops, city pedestrian walkways, etc.<\/o:p><\/p>

For greater comfort and safety, it is important to consider\nthe slip resistance of the tiles when purchasing a particular type\/model of\noutdoor tile. Therefore, it is important to choose the best anti-slip floor tile\nfor areas where there is a higher possibility of the tile becoming wet or even\nfrozen, such as near swimming pools or on entrance stairs. The classification\nfor slip resistance of floors is called the Rating for Shod Feet and has five\ncategories:<\/o:p><\/p>

R9 – very low slip resistance (used for hallways, stairs,\nmedical offices, etc.)<\/o:p><\/p>

R10 – low slip resistance (surfaces used in restaurants,\nmedical offices, etc.)<\/o:p><\/p>

R11 – medium slip resistance (warehouses, cafeterias, auto repair\nshops)<\/o:p><\/p>

R12 – good slip resistance (cold rooms, etc.)<\/o:p><\/p>

R13 – very good slip resistance, as is the case with car\nramps, parking lots, or large industrial kitchens.<\/o:p><\/p>

Outdoor floor tiles for terraces<\/o:p><\/b><\/p>

For exterior terraces, it is important to use non-slip and\nfrost-resistant porcelain floor tiles as they are typically exposed to harsh\nweather conditions. <\/o:p><\/p>

Outdoor tiles have the advantage of a wide range of\nfinishes. Due to the large number of finish options available, this type of\ntile can be adapted to any project, whether you want a certain color or a tile\nthat imitates stone, for example. As such, there are several types of finishes\navailable for outdoor tiles, including:<\/o:p><\/p>

\u00b7        \n<\/span><\/span>semi-gloss<\/o:p><\/p>

\u00b7        \n<\/span><\/span>wood-like<\/o:p><\/p>

\u00b7        \n<\/span><\/span>concrete-like<\/o:p><\/p>

However, indoor floor tiles cannot be used for outdoor\nprojects as they do not have the necessary technical characteristics.<\/o:p><\/p>

In comparison, porcelain floor tiles are more expensive than\nglazed tiles. Nevertheless, the price difference is reflected in durability and\nresistance, which means long-term savings.<\/o:p><\/p>
